Ubiquiti Router Login

192.168.1.1

Ubiquiti networking products use the UniFi ecosystem, which relies on a centralized controller application rather than traditional per-device web interfaces. The default IP address is 192.168.1.1 with ubnt/ubnt as factory credentials. Newer UniFi devices like the Dream Machine run the controller software on-device, while older access points and switches require a separate UniFi Network Application host. Ubiquiti Inc trades on NYSE under the ticker UI.

Ubiquiti is a networking company headquartered in New York, publicly traded on the NYSE as Ubiquiti Inc (ticker: UI). The company built its reputation on affordable enterprise-grade wireless equipment and has expanded into a full networking ecosystem called UniFi. Its products are popular with prosumers, small businesses, and IT professionals who want centralized network management.

How to Login to Your Ubiquiti Network

Ubiquiti UniFi products do not use a traditional router login page in the way most consumer brands do. The UniFi ecosystem relies on the UniFi Network Application, a controller that manages all devices from a single dashboard.

On a Dream Machine (UDM, UDM Pro, or UDM SE), go to 192.168.1.1 in your browser after setup is complete. This loads the UniFi OS dashboard, not a basic router page. You log in with the credentials created during initial setup through the UniFi Network mobile app.

For un-adopted devices or EdgeRouter products, the default IP address is 192.168.1.1 with ubnt as both username and password. EdgeRouters use a standalone web interface called EdgeOS, which is separate from the UniFi ecosystem entirely.

You can also access your network remotely through ui.com by signing in with your account, which tunnels into the local controller.

Ubiquiti Default Credentials by Model

Default credentials depend on whether the device is a UniFi product or an EdgeRouter product.

ModelDefault IPUsernamePasswordNotes
Dream Machine (UDM)192.168.1.1set during setupset during setupBuilt-in controller + WiFi
Dream Machine Pro192.168.1.1set during setupset during setupRackmount, no WiFi

EdgeRouter 4192.168.1.1ubntubntEdgeOS, not UniFi

UniFi devices adopted by a controller inherit the controller’s credentials. The ubnt/ubnt defaults only apply to devices in factory state before adoption.

Setting Up a Ubiquiti UniFi Network

First-time setup for a Dream Machine starts with the UniFi Network mobile app (iOS or Android). Plug the UDM into your modem via the WAN port and power it on. The device broadcasts a Bluetooth signal and a setup Wi-Fi network.

Open the app and follow the setup wizard. Create or sign into your Ubiquiti account. The app auto-detects the WAN connection type and configures the internet link. Set your Wi-Fi network name and password. The UDM creates both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under a single SSID by default.

For setups without a Dream Machine, install the UniFi Network Application on a Cloud Key, a local server, or a Docker container. The controller runs at https://localhost:8443 by default and discovers un-adopted UniFi devices on the LAN.

The adoption process is central to how UniFi works. Each device must be adopted into the controller by clicking Adopt. The controller pushes configuration to the device. Until adopted, UniFi access points do not broadcast any Wi-Fi networks.

Changing Your Wi-Fi Password

In the UniFi Network Application, go to Settings > WiFi. Click on your Wi-Fi network name. Update the password field and click Apply Changes. The controller pushes the new password to all access points simultaneously. Connected devices will disconnect and need to reconnect.

All wireless configuration flows through the controller. One change applies across every access point in your network. See the change Wi-Fi password guide for more context.

UniFi Controller and Cloud Management

The UniFi Network Application provides features beyond basic routing. The dashboard shows real-time traffic statistics, client device lists, network topology maps, and alerting. Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) categorizes traffic by application and client.

Port forwarding is configured under Settings > Firewall & Security > Port Forwarding. Add rules specifying the WAN port, protocol, and destination LAN IP address. The controller pushes firewall rules to the gateway device.

For remote access, enable Remote Access in the UniFi OS settings and link your Ubiquiti account. This allows management from unifi.ui.com without opening ports or setting up a VPN. The cloud portal provides full controller access including device management, client monitoring, and configuration changes.

Threat Management (IDS/IPS) is available on Dream Machine models. Enable it under Settings > Firewall & Security > Threat Management. Choose between detection-only and prevention modes.

Troubleshooting Ubiquiti UniFi Login

  1. Cannot reach 192.168.1.1 after setup. Verify your computer is connected to the UniFi network, not your old router. Check your default gateway IP address by running ipconfig (Windows) or ip route (Linux). If the gateway is different from 192.168.1.1, the UDM may have been configured with a different subnet.

  2. UniFi device stuck in “Adopting” state. The device cannot reach the controller. Ensure the controller host is on the same Layer 2 network. If the controller runs on a remote server, SSH into the device and run set-inform http://controller-ip:8080/inform to point it to the correct controller address.

  3. Login credentials rejected on the dashboard. UniFi devices do not use ubnt/ubnt after adoption. You need the credentials set during controller setup. If you forgot them, factory reset the Dream Machine (hold reset for 10 seconds) and re-run the setup wizard.

  4. Cloud access not working at unifi.ui.com. Remote access must be enabled in UniFi OS settings. The controller needs outbound internet access on port 443 to maintain the cloud tunnel.

  5. Access points not appearing in controller. UniFi devices use Layer 2 discovery. If the access point is on a different VLAN or subnet from the controller, it will not auto-discover. Use the SSH method above with set-inform to manually point the device to the controller.

Ubiquiti Router FAQ

What is the default IP address for Ubiquiti routers?

Ubiquiti UniFi gateways default to 192.168.1.1 as the IP address. The Dream Machine and Dream Machine Pro are accessible at this address after initial setup. During first-time setup, you use the UniFi Network mobile app instead of the browser.

What is the default Ubiquiti password?

Factory credentials are ubnt for both username and password. This applies to EdgeRouter products and un-adopted UniFi devices accessed via direct IP. UniFi devices managed by the controller use the credentials set during controller setup, not ubnt/ubnt.

What is the UniFi Network Application?

The UniFi Network Application is controller software that manages all UniFi devices from one dashboard. It runs on the Dream Machine itself, on a Cloud Key, or on a separate server (Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker). All configuration happens through this controller, not through individual device web pages.

What is device adoption in UniFi?

Adoption is the process of adding a UniFi device to your controller. New devices in factory default state broadcast their availability. The controller discovers them and you click Adopt. The device downloads its configuration from the controller. Devices must be adopted before they are functional in a UniFi network.

How do I reset a Ubiquiti UniFi device?

Hold the reset button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes white. The device returns to factory defaults and enters adoption-ready state. On a Dream Machine, this also resets the built-in controller, so you will need to re-adopt all other UniFi devices.

What is the difference between UDM, UDM Pro, and UDM SE?

The UDM (Dream Machine) is an all-in-one router with built-in Wi-Fi and controller. The UDM Pro is rackmount with no built-in Wi-Fi, a 10G SFP+ WAN port, and a hard drive bay for UniFi Protect cameras. The UDM SE adds 2.5G PoE ports and a larger hard drive bay. All three run the UniFi Network Application on-device.
