Synology Router Login
192.168.1.1
Synology Inc is a Taipei, Taiwan company known primarily for NAS devices, but its router lineup runs Synology Router Manager (SRM) instead of standard firmware. The default IP address is 192.168.1.1, and the login URL router.synology.com provides an alternative way to reach the admin panel. Synology routers target prosumer and small business users with features like Safe Access parental controls, VPN Plus Server, and Threat Prevention (IDS/IPS). The password is not preset and must be created during the initial setup wizard.
Synology Inc, headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, is best known for its network-attached storage devices. The company also produces a small but capable lineup of wireless routers that run Synology Router Manager (SRM), a purpose-built operating system distinct from standard router firmware. Synology routers appeal to prosumer and small business audiences who value integrated security features and a polished management interface.
How to Login to Your Synology Router
Synology routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address. Open a browser and type this address or use the alternate URL router.synology.com, which resolves to the router when you are on its network. The login page presents a username and password field.
During initial setup, you create the admin credentials yourself. There is no factory-set password. Enter the username and password you chose during the setup wizard. If you have not completed setup, the browser redirects to the wizard automatically.
The SRM interface resembles the DSM desktop used on Synology NAS products. It features a taskbar, application icons, and a multi-window layout. This design is more sophisticated than the simple menu-based panels found on most consumer routers.
Synology Default Credentials by Model
Synology does not ship routers with a preset password. The admin account is created during the first setup wizard.
| Model | Default IP | Login URL | Default Password | Wi-Fi Standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RT6600ax | 192.168.1.1 | router.synology.com | Set during setup | WiFi 6 (tri-band) |
| WRX560 | 192.168.1.1 | router.synology.com | Set during setup | WiFi 6 (dual-band) |
| RT2600ac | 192.168.1.1 | router.synology.com | Set during setup | WiFi 5 (dual-band) |
| MR2200ac | 192.168.1.1 | router.synology.com | Set during setup | WiFi 5 (mesh point) |
All models share the same default gateway and login URL. The MR2200ac functions as a mesh point when paired with a primary Synology router. For general login steps, see the VPN on router guide for one of many SRM capabilities.
Setting Up a Synology Router
Connect the WAN port on the Synology router to your modem or ISP gateway with an Ethernet cable. Plug in the power adapter and wait for the status LED to turn solid blue. The LAN ports are on the opposite side from the WAN port.
Step 1: Connect a computer or phone to the Synology network. Use an Ethernet cable to a LAN port or join the default Wi-Fi network. The default SSID is printed on the label at the bottom of the router.
Step 2: Open a browser and go to router.synology.com or 192.168.1.1. The setup wizard starts automatically on a new device.
Step 3: Create an admin account by entering a username and a strong password. SRM enforces password complexity requirements. You also set the Wi-Fi network name and password during this step.
Step 4: Select your internet connection type. SRM auto-detects DHCP, PPPoE, and static IP configurations. For PPPoE, enter the credentials from your ISP. The router tests the connection before proceeding.
Step 5: Choose whether to enable SRM packages like Safe Access and Threat Prevention during setup or install them later from the Package Center. Apply the settings and wait for the router to finalize the configuration.
Changing Your Synology Wi-Fi Password
Log into SRM at 192.168.1.1 or router.synology.com. Open Wi-Fi Connect from the main menu or the desktop shortcut.
Select the wireless network you want to modify. The RT6600ax has three radios (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz-1, 5 GHz-2), and each can have its own SSID and password. Change the password field and ensure WPA2/WPA3-Personal is selected as the security level. Click Apply.
Connected devices will disconnect and need to reconnect with the new credentials. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see the change Wi-Fi password guide.
SRM Packages and Security Features
Synology Router Manager uses a package-based architecture that lets you install only the features you need.
Safe Access. This parental control package creates user profiles with internet schedules, content category filters, and daily usage limits. It supports custom allow and block lists and enforces SafeSearch on Google and Bing. Usage reports show browsing history per profile.
VPN Plus Server. This package turns the Synology router into a full VPN server supporting WebVPN, SSL VPN, SSTP, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP. WebVPN allows browser-based remote access to internal web applications without a VPN client.
Threat Prevention. This is an intrusion detection and prevention system (IDS/IPS) that inspects network traffic for known attack signatures. It logs and optionally blocks suspicious activity with automatically updated signature databases.
Troubleshooting Synology Router Login
-
Cannot reach 192.168.1.1 or router.synology.com. Verify your device is connected to the Synology network and has an IP address in the 192.168.1.x range. If the router is behind another gateway on the same subnet, an IP conflict may occur. Connect directly to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable to isolate the issue.
-
Setup wizard does not appear on a new router. Clear your browser cache and try an incognito window. Ensure the router has finished booting by waiting for the status LED to turn solid. If the LED is flashing, the device is still starting up.
-
Admin password forgotten and cannot log in. Perform a factory reset on the router by pressing the reset button for 10 seconds. This erases all configurations including VPN profiles, Safe Access rules, and network settings. You must complete the setup wizard again.
-
SRM interface is slow or unresponsive. Close unused application windows within the SRM desktop. Threat Prevention, if enabled, uses significant processing power on the RT2600ac and MR2200ac. Disable it temporarily to test if performance improves. The RT6600ax handles these packages with less impact due to its faster processor.
-
Mesh point (MR2200ac) will not connect to the primary router. Ensure both devices run the same SRM version. Place the mesh point within range of the primary router during initial pairing. Open Wi-Fi Connect > Wi-Fi Point on the primary router to add the mesh unit. If pairing fails, factory reset the MR2200ac and try again.
Synology Router FAQ
What is the default IP address for Synology routers?
Synology routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway IP address. You can also access the admin panel through the URL router.synology.com, which resolves to the router automatically when you are connected to its network.
What is the default Synology router password?
Synology routers do not have a preset default password. During the initial setup wizard, you create an admin account with a username and password of your choice. If you forget the credentials, a factory reset forces you through the setup wizard again.
What is Synology Router Manager (SRM)?
SRM is the operating system that runs on Synology routers. It shares the same interface design as DSM (DiskStation Manager) used on Synology NAS devices. SRM provides a desktop-like web interface with installable packages such as Safe Access, VPN Plus Server, and Threat Prevention.
How do I reset a Synology router to factory settings?
Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds until the LED blinks. Release and wait for the router to reboot. This erases all settings and returns the device to factory state. You must complete the setup wizard again to configure admin credentials and network settings.
Does Synology support mesh networking?
Yes. The MR2200ac is a dedicated mesh unit that pairs with the RT6600ax or RT2600ac as a mesh point. You can add multiple MR2200ac units to extend coverage. Mesh configuration is managed through SRM on the primary router.
What is Safe Access on Synology routers?
Safe Access is a built-in parental control and web filtering package. It lets you create user profiles with time schedules, content filters by category, and usage reports. Safe Access can enforce Google SafeSearch and restrict access to specific websites or application categories.
