Netgear Router Login

192.168.1.1

Netgear routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway with routerlogin.net as the branded login URL. The default password is 'password', not 'admin' like most other brands. Netgear's lineup splits into Nighthawk (standalone routers) and Orbi (mesh systems), both running the NETGEAR genie or newer NETGEAR Armor firmware interfaces.

How to Login to Your Netgear Router

Netgear routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address. Open a browser and type that IP address or routerlogin.net in the address bar. You must be connected to the router’s network first.

The login page appears with username and password fields. Enter admin as the username and password as the password. This catches most people off guard. Netgear uses “password” as the literal default password, not “admin” like TP-Link or ASUS.

After login, you land on the NETGEAR genie dashboard (older models) or the NETGEAR web interface (newer Nighthawk and Orbi models). The dashboard shows internet connection status, attached devices, parental controls, and quick access to wireless settings.

For Orbi mesh systems, you can also use orbilogin.com as the login URL. This reaches the Orbi router’s admin panel, which has a slightly different interface from Nighthawk routers. Orbi satellites do not have their own admin panel. Everything is managed from the main Orbi router unit.

The brand keeps credentials consistent: every router and Orbi system uses admin/password. The only exception is range extenders, which use mywifiext.net instead of routerlogin.net as their setup URL.

Older models (pre-2016) sometimes default to 192.168.0.1 instead of 192.168.1.1. If 192.168.1.1 does not work on an older unit, try the alternate IP.

Setting Up a Netgear Router

The brand offers both app-based and web-based setup paths. Connect the yellow internet port on the router to your modem with an Ethernet cable. Power on the router and wait for the power LED to turn solid white or green (about 2 minutes).

Nighthawk app setup. Download the Nighthawk app (iOS/Android). Create a NETGEAR account or sign in. The app detects your router and walks through internet connection setup, Wi-Fi network name, Wi-Fi password, and admin password configuration. The app is the fastest setup method.

Web-based setup. Connect to the router’s default Wi-Fi (SSID and password on the bottom sticker). Open a browser and go to routerlogin.net. The NETGEAR Setup Wizard auto-detects your ISP connection type. For PPPoE, enter your ISP credentials. Set your SSID and Wi-Fi password.

Orbi app setup. Orbi mesh systems use the dedicated Orbi app, not the Nighthawk app. Download the Orbi app, create a NETGEAR account, and follow the prompts. Set up the main Orbi router first, then add satellites one at a time. Place satellites within range of the router. The Orbi app shows signal strength during placement.

These routers default to WPA2 security. On newer models that support WPA3, go to Wireless Settings and change the security mode to WPA2/WPA3 for backward compatibility. Pure WPA3 mode may block older devices that do not support it.

Changing Wi-Fi Password on Netgear

These routers store separate passwords for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Log into routerlogin.net or the default IP address. Go to Wireless in the left sidebar (or Setup > Wireless Settings on older firmware).

You will see fields for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Each band has its own SSID and password. Change the Passphrase field under each band. Set the Security Options to WPA2-PSK [AES] or WPA3-Personal if available.

Click Apply at the top of the page. The router takes about 30 seconds to apply changes. All connected devices will disconnect and need the new password to rejoin.

On Orbi systems, go to Wireless and change the password there. Orbi uses a single SSID across both bands and all satellites. Changing the password on the router unit propagates to all satellites automatically. For a full walkthrough covering other brands, see our change Wi-Fi password guide.

Netgear Armor and Security

Armor provides network-level security powered by Bitdefender. It scans all traffic passing through the router for malware, phishing attempts, and known threats. Unlike ASUS AiProtection (which is free), Armor requires a paid subscription, approximately $100 per year after the 30-day trial.

The subscription includes Bitdefender Total Security licenses for up to 50 devices (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android). If you already pay for antivirus software, Armor can replace it. Enable Armor through the Nighthawk or Orbi app under Security.

For free security measures, change the default admin password immediately. Disable WPS under Advanced > Advanced Setup > WPS Settings. Enable the built-in firewall at Advanced > Setup > WAN Setup > enable Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection. Turn off remote management unless you specifically need it.

Troubleshooting Netgear Router Login

Cannot access routerlogin.net. The DNS alias only works when your device uses the router’s DNS. If you have set DNS to 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1, or another provider, the alias will not resolve. Type the default IP address 192.168.1.1 directly instead. If that also fails, check your default gateway with ipconfig (Windows) or ip route (macOS/Linux).

Password “password” does not work. Someone changed it. The brand does not offer password recovery through the web interface. You have two options: if you enabled password recovery questions during setup, click “Cancel” on the login page to trigger the recovery prompt. Otherwise, factory reset by holding the reset button for 10 seconds.

Firmware update fails. Download the firmware file from the support site manually. Go to Advanced > Administration > Firmware Update > Manual Update. Select the downloaded file and upload it. Do not power off the router during the update. A failed firmware flash can brick the unit.

Orbi satellite will not connect. Place the satellite closer to the main router during initial setup. Press the Sync button on the router, then press Sync on the satellite within 2 minutes. The satellite LED turns solid white when connected (good signal), amber when weak, or magenta when it cannot connect. If magenta persists, factory reset the satellite and try again through the Orbi app.

Netgear Router FAQ

What is the default IP address for Netgear routers?

Most Netgear routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway. Some older models default to 192.168.0.1 instead. You can also access the admin panel at routerlogin.net. For Orbi mesh systems, orbilogin.com works as an additional alias.

What is the default Netgear router password?

The default username is admin and the default password is password (lowercase). This is different from most other router brands that use admin/admin. The credentials are printed on the label underneath the router. Newer models may prompt you to change the password during first setup.

How do I access routerlogin.net?

Connect to your Netgear router's Wi-Fi or Ethernet and type routerlogin.net in your browser. This local DNS alias resolves to your router's IP address. If it does not load, try 192.168.1.1 directly. The alias fails if you have changed your DNS servers to third-party providers like 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1.

What is the difference between Nighthawk and Orbi?

Nighthawk is Netgear's standalone router line (R7000, RAX50, RAX80, etc.) designed for single-point coverage. Orbi is the mesh WiFi system (RBK852, RBK863S) using a dedicated backhaul band for communication between router and satellites. Orbi covers larger homes; Nighthawk covers single floors or apartments well.

How do I reset a Netgear router to factory settings?

Press and hold the reset button (small pinhole on the back) for 7-10 seconds until the power LED blinks amber. Release and wait 2 minutes for the router to restart. All settings revert to factory defaults. The admin password resets to 'password'.

What is Netgear Armor and is it free?

Netgear Armor is an antivirus and security service powered by Bitdefender. It protects all devices on your network plus includes Bitdefender Total Security licenses for your computers and phones. Armor requires a paid annual subscription (around $100/year) after a 30-day trial. Unlike ASUS AiProtection, it is not free.
