The brand has built a following among frequent travelers and privacy-conscious users who want VPN protection at the router level.

How to Login to Your GL.iNet Router

GL.iNet routers use 192.168.8.1 as the default IP address. Connect to the router over Wi-Fi or Ethernet and open a browser. Type 192.168.8.1 in the address bar. The GL.iNet admin panel loads with a clean, minimal interface.

On a new device, the first screen is a setup wizard that asks you to select a language and create an admin password. There is no factory-set default password.

For returning logins, enter the admin password you created during setup. The GL.iNet interface provides quick access to internet status, VPN client toggle, connected devices, and wireless settings. An Advanced Settings link opens the full OpenWrt LuCI interface for users who need granular control.

GL.iNet Default Credentials by Model

GL.iNet does not use preset passwords. The admin password is created during the first setup wizard on all models.

All models share the same 192.168.8.1 gateway. The default Wi-Fi SSID and password are printed on the label or included card. For VPN configuration details, see the VPN on router guide.

Setting Up a GL.iNet Router

GL.iNet routers support multiple internet sources: Ethernet cable, Wi-Fi repeater, USB tethering, and USB cellular modem. The setup process depends on which source you use.

Step 1: Power the router using the included USB-C cable and adapter. Wait for the LED to turn solid. The boot time is typically 30 seconds.

Step 2: Connect your device to the GL.iNet Wi-Fi network. The default SSID is printed on the device label (typically GL-ModelName-xxx). Enter the default Wi-Fi password from the label.

Step 3: Open a browser and go to 192.168.8.1. Select your language and create an admin password.

Step 4: Choose your internet source. For Ethernet, connect a cable from your modem or hotel port to the WAN port. For Wi-Fi repeater mode, scan for available networks and enter the upstream password. For USB tethering, connect your phone and enable tethering.

Step 5: The dashboard shows the active internet source. Enable the VPN client if you want to route all traffic through a VPN tunnel.

Changing Your GL.iNet Wi-Fi Password

Log into the admin panel at 192.168.8.1. Click Wireless in the left navigation menu.

The page displays both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks (on dual-band models). Click the pencil icon next to the network you want to modify. Change the Wi-Fi password field and click Apply. The radio restarts within a few seconds.

All connected devices disconnect and must reconnect with the new credentials. For a complete walkthrough, see the change Wi-Fi password guide.

OpenWrt Foundation and VPN Features

The OpenWrt-based firmware is the defining characteristic of GL.iNet routers. This open-source foundation provides capabilities that closed-source consumer routers cannot match.

Built-in VPN client. Every GL.iNet router ships with WireGuard and OpenVPN client support. Upload a configuration file from your VPN provider, toggle the VPN on from the dashboard, and all traffic from every connected device routes through the encrypted tunnel. WireGuard offers significantly faster speeds than OpenVPN due to its lighter protocol overhead.

AdGuard Home integration. Recent firmware versions include AdGuard Home as an installable plugin. This provides network-wide ad blocking and tracker blocking at the DNS level. Every device connected to the router benefits without installing software on each one.

SSH access and OpenWrt LuCI. Users with networking knowledge can SSH into the router and access the full OpenWrt command line. The LuCI web interface is accessible from the Advanced Settings page and exposes every configuration option including custom firewall rules and package installation.

USB tethering and modem support. GL.iNet routers accept internet connections from phones via USB tethering and from USB cellular modems. This is ideal for travel scenarios where the only internet source is a mobile phone or a local SIM card.

Troubleshooting GL.iNet Router Login

  1. Cannot reach 192.168.8.1 in a browser. Confirm your device is connected to the GL.iNet Wi-Fi network and not the upstream network (in repeater mode, two networks exist). Check that your device has an IP address in the 192.168.8.x range. If the router is not broadcasting Wi-Fi, connect via Ethernet to the LAN port.

  2. Admin password forgotten. Perform a factory reset on the router by holding the reset button for 10 seconds. This erases all settings including VPN profiles, Wi-Fi passwords, and the admin password. The setup wizard appears again at 192.168.8.1.

  3. VPN client connects but internet stops working. The VPN server may be unreachable or the configuration file may be outdated. Try a different server location. Toggle the kill switch off temporarily to verify the underlying internet connection works without VPN.

  4. Wi-Fi repeater mode cannot find upstream networks. Move the GL.iNet router closer to the source Wi-Fi network. Some hotel captive portals require browser authentication before the repeater connection works. Connect a device to the GL.iNet network and open a browser to trigger the portal redirect.

  5. Router runs hot or reboots randomly. GL.iNet travel routers are small and can overheat under sustained load with VPN encryption active. Place the device on a hard surface with airflow. If reboots continue, try a different USB power source that provides stable 5V/2A output.

GL.iNet Router FAQ

What is the default IP address for GL.iNet routers?

GL.iNet routers use 192.168.8.1 as the default gateway IP address. This applies to all models including the Slate AX, Beryl AX, Opal, and Mango. The 192.168.8.x subnet is uncommon and avoids conflicts with most home and hotel networks.

What is the default GL.iNet router password?

GL.iNet routers do not have a preset default password. You create the admin password during the first setup wizard when you access the web panel at 192.168.8.1. If you forget the password, a factory reset forces you through the setup process again.

Is GL.iNet based on OpenWrt?

Yes. GL.iNet firmware is built on top of OpenWrt, the open-source router operating system. GL.iNet adds a simplified web interface on top of the standard OpenWrt backend. Advanced users can access the full OpenWrt LuCI interface and SSH terminal for complete control.

How do I reset a GL.iNet router to factory settings?

Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds while the device is powered on. The LED flashes and the router reboots. This erases all settings including VPN profiles, Wi-Fi passwords, and the admin password. You must complete the setup wizard again at 192.168.8.1.

Does GL.iNet support VPN out of the box?

Yes. All GL.iNet routers include built-in VPN client support for both WireGuard and OpenVPN. You can upload VPN configuration files from providers like Mullvad, NordVPN, or Surfshark directly through the admin panel. The router encrypts all traffic from connected devices through the VPN tunnel.

Can I use a GL.iNet router as a travel router?

Yes. GL.iNet routers are designed as portable travel routers. They can connect to hotel Wi-Fi, tether from a phone via USB, or use a USB cellular modem as the internet source. The router then creates a private Wi-Fi network for your devices with VPN protection.
