Fritz!Box Router Login

192.168.178.1

Fritz!Box routers use 192.168.178.1 as the default IP address, a unique subnet not shared by any other major brand. The login URL fritz.box also works as a browser shortcut. There is no universal default password. Each device ships with a unique password printed on the bottom label. Fritz!OS firmware includes DECT telephony integration, making these routers double as phone base stations. AVM GmbH manufactures the Fritz!Box line from its headquarters in Berlin, Germany.

Fritz!Box is the flagship router line from AVM GmbH, a networking company headquartered in Berlin, Germany. The brand holds over 60% market share in Germany and is widely distributed by ISPs including Deutsche Telekom, 1&1, and Vodafone Germany. Fritz!Box routers stand apart from global competitors by integrating telephony, smart home, and NAS functions into a single device.

How to Login to Your Fritz!Box

Fritz!Box routers use 192.168.178.1 as the default IP address. Type this IP address or the shortcut fritz.box in your browser. The login page displays a single password field with no username required.

Enter the device-specific password printed on the label on the bottom of your Fritz!Box. Unlike most brands that ship with universal credentials like admin/admin, AVM assigns a unique password to each unit. This approach eliminates the security risk of users never changing a well-known default.

If you have changed the password during setup and forgotten it, a factory reset restores the original device password from the label. The 192.168.178.1 subnet is unique to AVM products, which means the device rarely conflicts with other routers on the network.

ISP-distributed units from Deutsche Telekom may have a custom firmware overlay but still use the same 192.168.178.1 address and fritz.box login URL.

Setting Up a Fritz!Box

Connect the Fritz!Box to your internet source. For DSL models (7590 AX, 7530), plug a phone cable from the wall jack to the DSL/TEL port. For the 5590 Fiber, connect the fiber cable to the SFP port. For the 4060 (which has no built-in modem), connect an Ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port.

Power on the device and wait 2-3 minutes for it to synchronize. The Power/DSL LED stops flashing and turns solid green when the connection is established. Connect to the default Wi-Fi network. The SSID and password are printed on the device label.

Open a browser and go to fritz.box. The setup wizard detects your connection type automatically. For DSL users, select your ISP from the list. Fritz!OS stores connection profiles for major German and European providers. Enter your ISP account credentials if prompted.

Changing Your Wi-Fi Password

Log into the admin panel at fritz.box or 192.168.178.1. Go to Wi-Fi > Security in the left menu. The current network key (password) is displayed in the Wi-Fi Network Key field.

Enter a new password and click Apply. Fritz!OS supports WPA2, WPA3, and WPA2+WPA3 mixed mode. Select WPA2+WPA3 for maximum compatibility with older and newer devices. The wireless radio restarts within 10 seconds. All connected devices will need to reconnect. For general tips, see the change Wi-Fi password guide.

The Fritz!Box supports separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs or a combined single SSID with automatic band steering. Band steering is enabled by default on newer models and directs capable devices to the faster 5 GHz band.

DECT Telephony and Smart Home

Fritz!Box routers include a built-in DECT base station that supports up to 6 cordless handsets. Go to Telephony > DECT to register a new handset. The router handles VoIP calling through your ISP’s phone service or third-party SIP providers.

Features include a built-in answering machine, call blocking by number or prefix, phone book management with online sync (Google Contacts, CardDAV), and fax-to-email. These telephony features are unique to the platform.

Fritz!DECT smart home devices (smart plugs, radiator thermostats, LED bulbs) connect directly to the base station over DECT ULE. Control them through the admin panel at Smart Home or through the MyFRITZ!App. No separate smart home hub is needed.

MyFRITZ! remote access lets you manage the router and control smart home devices from anywhere. Register at myfritz.net and link your device.

Troubleshooting Fritz!Box Login

  1. fritz.box does not load in the browser. This DNS alias only works if the Fritz!Box is your DNS server. If you have changed DNS to a third-party service (Cloudflare, Google DNS), type the IP address 192.168.178.1 directly. Alternatively, restore the router’s DHCP-assigned DNS on your device.

  2. Password from the device label does not work. The label shows the factory password. If someone changed it during setup, the original label password no longer works. Load factory settings through the reset process by going to System > Backup > Factory Settings or using the DECT phone reset code #99115901590.

  3. DSL LED keeps flashing and does not go solid. The Fritz!Box cannot synchronize with your ISP’s DSLAM. Check that the phone cable is connected to the correct port (DSL/TEL, not the analog phone ports FON1/FON2). Try a different phone cable. Contact your ISP if the line sync fails consistently, as it may indicate a line fault.

  4. Wi-Fi disconnects frequently. Go to Wi-Fi > Radio Channel and switch from automatic to a fixed channel. In dense apartment buildings, automatic channel selection may hop between channels, causing brief disconnections. Set the 5 GHz band to a DFS channel (above 100) where congestion is lower.

  5. Cannot access admin panel from a specific device. Fritz!OS includes an access profile system that can restrict admin panel access. Go to System > Fritz!Box Users and check that your device is not blocked. Guest network clients cannot access the admin panel by default.

Fritz!Box Router FAQ

What is the default IP address for Fritz!Box?

Fritz!Box routers use 192.168.178.1 as the default IP address. You can also type fritz.box in your browser, which resolves locally to the same address. The 178 subnet is unique to AVM products and avoids conflicts with other routers on the network.

What is the default Fritz!Box password?

There is no universal default password. Each Fritz!Box ships with a unique device-specific password printed on the label on the bottom of the unit. This is more secure than the admin/admin defaults used by most other brands. If you lose the label, a factory reset restores the original device password.

What is fritz.box and why does it work in my browser?

fritz.box is a local DNS alias that the Fritz!Box router registers on your network. When you type it in a browser, the router's DNS server resolves it to 192.168.178.1. It stops working if you override your DNS settings with a third-party provider like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).

How do I reset a Fritz!Box to factory settings?

Go to System > Backup > Factory Settings in the Fritz!OS interface and click Load Factory Settings. Alternatively, dial #991*15901590* from a connected DECT phone. There is no physical reset button on most models. The device reboots and returns to factory defaults including the original device password.

What is MyFRITZ! remote access?

MyFRITZ! is a free service from AVM that provides remote access to your Fritz!Box over the internet. Register at myfritz.net with an AVM account. Once linked, you can access your Fritz!Box admin panel, NAS storage, and smart home devices from any browser without configuring port forwarding or VPN manually.

Can Fritz!Box work as a DECT phone base station?

Yes. Fritz!Box routers include a built-in DECT base station. Register DECT cordless phones through the admin panel under Telephony > DECT. The router supports VoIP calling, answering machine functions, call blocking, and phone book sync. Up to 6 DECT handsets can be registered on most models.
