Comtrend Router Login

192.168.1.1

Comtrend Corporation is a Taiwanese telecommunications equipment manufacturer that produces DSL modems and broadband gateways for internet service providers. Comtrend devices are never sold at retail. They reach consumers through ISP bundles from providers like CenturyLink and Telus. The default gateway is 192.168.1.1 with an unusual default login of root/12345. The NexusLink and VR series form the core product line, focusing on DSL and VDSL broadband connections. Comtrend routers have a more limited web interface compared to retail brands, reflecting their role as ISP-managed customer premises equipment.

Comtrend Corporation, headquartered in Taiwan, manufactures DSL modems and broadband gateways for internet service providers worldwide. The company does not sell products through retail channels. Every Comtrend device in a home or office arrived through an ISP such as CenturyLink in the United States or Telus in Canada as part of a broadband subscription.

How to Login to Your Comtrend Router

Comtrend routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address. Open a browser on any device connected to the Comtrend network and type that address in the address bar.

The login page displays username and password fields. Enter root as the username and 12345 as the password. This root/12345 combination is different from the admin-based credentials used by most other router manufacturers. On some ISP-configured units, the credentials may have been changed during provisioning.

After logging in, the admin panel shows a basic status page with DSL line status, WAN connection information, and LAN client details. The Comtrend interface is minimal compared to retail router brands, providing fewer menus and configuration options.

Setting Up a Comtrend Router

Comtrend routers are pre-configured by the ISP before delivery. If you need to set up the device after a factory reset, follow these steps.

Connect the phone line to the DSL port using the included phone cable. If your ISP provided a DSL filter or splitter, install it between the wall jack and the phone line. Plug in the power adapter and wait 2-3 minutes for the DSL LED to turn solid green, indicating a successful line sync.

Step 1: Connect a computer to the Comtrend device via Ethernet cable or the default Wi-Fi network. The default SSID is printed on the device label.

Step 2: Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1. Log in with root/12345.

Step 3: Go to the WAN settings. For DSL connections, you need the VPI/VCI values (for ADSL) or VLAN ID (for VDSL) from your ISP. CenturyLink typically uses VPI 0 / VCI 35 for ADSL connections. Enter the PPPoE username and password from your ISP.

Step 4: The Wi-Fi network should be active with factory defaults. Customize the SSID and password in the wireless settings section.

For CenturyLink-specific setup instructions, check the ISP support page for your region.

Changing Your Comtrend Wi-Fi Password

Log into the admin panel at 192.168.1.1 with root/12345. Go to Wireless > Security in the menu.

Select WPA2-PSK as the network authentication type. In the WPA Pre-Shared Key field, enter a new password of at least 8 characters. Click Apply or Save Settings.

The wireless radio restarts and disconnects all clients. Reconnect using the new password. Note that some Comtrend models separate 2.4 GHz settings from any 5 GHz settings if the model supports dual-band operation.

Comtrend DSL Features and ISP Integration

Comtrend devices are purpose-built for DSL broadband delivery, with features tailored to ISP deployment requirements.

DSL line diagnostics. The admin panel includes a DSL diagnostics page showing downstream and upstream sync rates, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and line attenuation. These metrics help diagnose connection speed and stability issues. A low SNR margin (below 6 dB) typically indicates line quality problems that require ISP intervention.

TR-069 remote management. ISPs use TR-069 to remotely configure and update Comtrend devices. Users cannot disable this protocol on ISP-provisioned hardware.

VDSL2 bonding. Models like the VR-3026e support VDSL2 bonding, which combines two DSL lines into a single connection for higher bandwidth on the LAN side. ISPs deploy bonded VDSL in areas where fiber has not yet been installed.

Limited port forwarding. Go to Advanced Setup > NAT > Virtual Servers to create port forwarding rules. The number of rules is limited compared to retail routers.

No USB or NAS support. Comtrend devices focus exclusively on broadband connectivity with no USB ports or network storage features.

Troubleshooting Comtrend Router Login

  1. Cannot reach 192.168.1.1. Verify you are connected to the Comtrend device directly via Ethernet or its Wi-Fi network. If you have added your own router behind the Comtrend modem, you may be on your router’s subnet instead. Connect directly to the Comtrend LAN port and try again. Check that your computer’s IP address is in the 192.168.1.x range.

  2. Root/12345 password rejected. Your ISP may have changed the default credentials during provisioning. Check the device label for ISP-specific login information. Contact CenturyLink or Telus support for the correct credentials. As a last resort, perform a factory reset by holding the reset button for 15 seconds. Be aware that ISP settings will be erased and may require re-provisioning.

  3. DSL LED blinking or off. A blinking DSL LED means the modem is attempting to sync. Wait 5 minutes. If the LED remains off, check the phone cable and ensure DSL filters are installed on all phone jacks. Contact your ISP to verify the line is active.

  4. Internet works but Wi-Fi is weak. Comtrend routers are ISP-grade equipment with modest wireless performance. The internal antennas provide limited range compared to retail routers with external antennas. Consider placing the Comtrend device in bridge mode (if supported by your ISP) and connecting a dedicated wireless router to a LAN port for better coverage.

  5. Firmware is outdated. Comtrend firmware updates are managed by your ISP through TR-069 and cannot be downloaded or installed manually. If you are experiencing performance or security issues, contact your ISP and request a firmware update. In some cases, the ISP may offer a newer modem model as a replacement instead.

Comtrend Router FAQ

What is the default IP address for Comtrend routers?

Comtrend routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway address. This is consistent across the NexusLink and VR series models. Some ISPs may configure a different default IP, so check the label on the bottom of the device if 192.168.1.1 does not load.

What is the default Comtrend router password?

The factory default username is root and the password is 12345 on most Comtrend models. This combination is unusual compared to the admin/admin or admin/password defaults used by other brands. Some ISPs may change these credentials during provisioning, so check the device label.

Can I buy a Comtrend router at a store?

No. Comtrend Corporation manufactures broadband equipment exclusively for ISP deployment. You cannot purchase Comtrend devices at retail stores or online. The router is provided as part of your broadband subscription. Contact your ISP for replacement hardware.

How do I reset a Comtrend router to factory settings?

Press and hold the reset button on the back of the device for 10-15 seconds until the power LED blinks. Release and wait 2-3 minutes for the reboot. Factory reset restores root/12345 credentials and the default 192.168.1.1 gateway. Your ISP may need to re-provision the device for internet service to resume.

Why is the Comtrend admin interface so basic?

Comtrend devices are designed for ISP deployment, not retail consumers. The web interface provides only the settings that ISPs want customers to access, typically Wi-Fi configuration and basic device management. Advanced settings like VLAN tagging, TR-069, and WAN configuration are often hidden or locked.

Which Comtrend router models are most common?

The VR-3031u (VDSL2 modem-router), AR-5389 (ADSL2+ modem-router), CT-5361 (ADSL2+ gateway), NexusLink 3120 (DSL modem-router), and VR-3026e (VDSL2 bonded modem) are the most widely deployed models. CenturyLink and Telus are the primary ISPs that supply Comtrend hardware.
