Buffalo Router Login
192.168.11.1
Buffalo Inc is a Japanese networking company headquartered in Nagoya that produces wireless routers, NAS devices, and networking accessories under the AirStation brand. Buffalo routers use 192.168.11.1 as the default gateway, which is highly unusual compared to the 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 used by nearly every other brand. Factory credentials are admin/password on most models. Buffalo routers are extremely popular in Japan but less common in North America and Europe. Several Buffalo models ship with DD-WRT firmware pre-installed, giving advanced users open-source flexibility out of the box.
Buffalo Inc, headquartered in Nagoya, Japan, produces networking equipment under the AirStation brand. The company holds significant market share in Japan for consumer wireless routers, though its global presence is more limited. Buffalo routers stand out for their unusual default IP address of 192.168.11.1 and for offering DD-WRT open-source firmware on select models.
How to Login to Your Buffalo Router
Buffalo AirStation routers use 192.168.1.1 on some older models but primarily default to 192.168.11.1 as the gateway IP address. Open a browser on any device connected to the Buffalo network and type 192.168.11.1 in the address bar.
The login page displays fields for username and password. Enter admin as the username and password as the password. On older Buffalo models, try root with a blank password if admin/password is rejected.
After logging in, the AirStation admin panel displays the connection status, wireless settings, and connected device list. The interface layout depends on whether the router runs standard Buffalo firmware or DD-WRT firmware.
On models with DD-WRT, the admin panel looks completely different from standard Buffalo firmware. DD-WRT uses its own layout with tabs across the top for Setup, Wireless, Services, Security, and Administration.

Setting Up a Buffalo Router
Connect an Ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port (labeled INTERNET) on the Buffalo router. Plug in the power adapter and wait 1-2 minutes for all LEDs to stabilize.
Step 1: Connect a computer or phone to the Buffalo router via Ethernet or the default Wi-Fi network. The default SSID is printed on the label attached to the router or included on a setup card in the box.
Step 2: Open a browser and go to 192.168.11.1. Log in with admin/password.
Step 3: The setup wizard should appear on first login. Select your internet connection type. Most cable and fiber connections use DHCP (automatic IP). DSL users may need PPPoE with credentials from their ISP.
Step 4: Set the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. Buffalo routers create separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks by default, typically with suffixes like -G and -A to distinguish the bands.
Step 5: Save settings and wait for the router to apply changes. Reconnect using your new Wi-Fi credentials.
Changing Your Buffalo Wi-Fi Password
Log into the admin panel at 192.168.11.1. On standard Buffalo firmware, go to Wireless > 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Locate the WPA Pre-Shared Key field and enter a new password.
On DD-WRT firmware, go to Wireless > Wireless Security. Change the WPA Shared Key for each virtual interface. Select WPA2 Personal as the security mode.
Set a password of at least 8 characters. Click Apply or Save. The wireless radio restarts and disconnects all clients. Reconnect with the new password. For more details, see the Wi-Fi password guide.
DD-WRT and Open-Source Firmware on Buffalo Routers
Buffalo is one of the few manufacturers that ships certain models with DD-WRT firmware pre-installed. This open-source firmware provides features normally found only on enterprise hardware.
VPN server. DD-WRT includes built-in OpenVPN and PPTP server support. You can connect to your home network securely from anywhere without third-party software on the router.
Advanced QoS. Traffic shaping and Quality of Service rules let you prioritize specific devices or applications. This is useful for gaming or video calls on busy networks.
Custom DNS and ad blocking. Configure DNSMasq directly on the router to block ads and tracking domains across the entire LAN.
Wireless modes. DD-WRT supports repeater, bridge, and client modes, letting you repurpose an old Buffalo router as a range extender.
Troubleshooting Buffalo Router Login
-
Cannot reach 192.168.11.1. This unusual IP address catches many users off guard. Verify your computer received an IP address in the 192.168.11.x range by checking your network adapter settings. If your gateway shows a different address, you may be connected to a different router or the Buffalo device is in bridge mode. Connect via Ethernet directly to a LAN port on the Buffalo router and try again.
-
Admin password rejected. Try admin/password first, then root with a blank password for older DD-WRT models. If neither works, the password was changed. Perform a factory reset by holding the INIT button for 10 seconds until the DIAG LED flashes.
-
Interface displays in Japanese. Buffalo routers purchased in Japan default to Japanese. Look for a globe icon or language dropdown on the login page. On DD-WRT, go to Administration > Management and change Language to English. If no English option exists, the firmware may be a Japan-only build.
-
Router drops Wi-Fi connections frequently. Log into 192.168.11.1 and check the wireless channel settings. In dense apartment buildings common in Japan, channel congestion is a major issue. Manually set the 2.4 GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 and pick a clear 5 GHz channel. Update firmware if available.
-
DD-WRT firmware update fails. Download the correct DD-WRT build for your exact Buffalo model from the DD-WRT database. Use the Administration > Firmware Upgrade page. Never interrupt the process. If the router becomes unresponsive after a failed flash, use the TFTP recovery method described in the Buffalo support documentation.
Buffalo Router FAQ
What is the default IP address for Buffalo routers?
Buffalo AirStation routers use 192.168.11.1 as the default gateway. This is different from the 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 used by most other router brands. If 192.168.11.1 does not load, check the label on the bottom of your Buffalo router for the correct IP address.
What is the default Buffalo router password?
The default username is admin and the default password is password on most Buffalo models. Some older models use root with a blank password instead. ISP-provided or region-specific Buffalo routers may have different credentials printed on the device label.
How do I reset a Buffalo router to factory settings?
Locate the INIT or Reset button on the back of the router. Press and hold it for 5-10 seconds while the router is powered on until the DIAG LED flashes. Release and wait for the router to reboot completely. This restores the default 192.168.11.1 gateway and admin/password credentials.
Do Buffalo routers come with DD-WRT firmware?
Several Buffalo AirStation models ship with DD-WRT open-source firmware pre-installed. This gives access to advanced features like VPN server, VLAN support, QoS, and custom DNS. Models with DD-WRT use a different admin interface than standard Buffalo firmware. Not all Buffalo models include DD-WRT, so check the specifications before purchasing.
Why is my Buffalo router interface in Japanese?
Buffalo routers sold in Japan default to a Japanese-language admin interface. To switch to English, look for a language selector or globe icon on the login page or settings menu. On DD-WRT models, go to Administration > Management and change the language setting. Some Japan-only models do not have English firmware available.
Which Buffalo router models are most popular?
The WSR-3200AX4S and WSR-5400AX6S are current WiFi 6 models. The WXR-5950AX12 is the flagship WiFi 6 router with external antennas. The WSR-1166DHP series remains popular as a budget WiFi 5 option. In North America, the older WHR and WZR series with DD-WRT firmware built a strong following among advanced users.
