Arris Router Login

192.168.0.1

Arris gateways combine cable modems and routers into a single device, most commonly seen in ISP-supplied equipment from Spectrum, Xfinity, Cox, and AT&T. The default IP address is 192.168.0.1 with admin/password as factory credentials. SURFboard-branded models like the SBG6900-AC and SBG8300 support DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 standards. CommScope Inc acquired Arris International in 2019 and continues selling under the Arris brand for consumer networking products.

Arris is a networking brand owned by CommScope Inc, specializing in cable modem-routers and gateways for residential broadband. The company holds a dominant position in ISP-supplied equipment across North America. Its SURFboard product line is one of the most recognized names in cable internet hardware.

How to Login to Your Arris Gateway

Arris gateways use 192.168.0.1 as the default IP address. Type that IP address in your browser while connected to the device via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable. The admin panel loads a basic web interface with status, wireless, and firewall tabs.

Enter admin as the username and password as the default password. ISP-supplied units from Xfinity often have customized credentials printed on the device label instead of the universal defaults. Check the sticker on the bottom or side of the gateway.

AT&T variants like the BGW210-700 use a different IP address (192.168.1.254) and a device-specific access code printed on the unit. These gateways run AT&T firmware and have a different admin interface than retail SURFboard models.

Arris Default Credentials by Model

ISP-configured gateways may override these defaults with provider-specific credentials. Always check the physical label on the device first.

Setting Up an Arris SURFboard Gateway

Connect a coaxial cable from your wall outlet to the cable input on the back of the gateway. Plug in the power adapter and wait 5-10 minutes for the device to establish a connection with your ISP. The online LED must be solid before proceeding. Cable modems take longer to boot than standard routers because they negotiate a DOCSIS channel with the ISP headend.

Connect to the default Wi-Fi network printed on the device label, or use an Ethernet cable to the LAN port. Open a browser and go to 192.168.0.1. On a new retail unit, the setup wizard walks through basic wireless configuration.

For ISP-supplied gateways, the ISP typically pre-configures the device. You may still want to change the Wi-Fi name and password through the admin panel. Go to Wireless > Primary Network and update the SSID and passphrase fields.

Changing Your Wi-Fi Password

Log into the admin panel at the default IP address. Go to Wireless > Primary Network (or 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz tabs on dual-band models). Find the passphrase or pre-shared key field.

Enter a new password with at least 12 characters. Select WPA2-PSK as the security mode. Avoid WEP and WPA, which are outdated and insecure. Click Apply and wait 30 seconds for the wireless radio to restart. All connected devices will disconnect and need to reconnect with the new password. For general guidance, see the change Wi-Fi password guide.

Modem Mode vs Gateway Mode

SURFboard gateways can operate in two modes. Gateway mode runs both the cable modem and router functions in one device. This is the default and works for most users.

Modem mode (bridge mode) disables the router, firewall, DHCP, and Wi-Fi functions. The device passes the raw internet connection to a separate router connected to its WAN port. Use modem mode if you own a dedicated router and want to avoid double NAT, which causes problems with gaming, VPN connections, and port forwarding.

To enable modem mode on an SBG8300, log into the admin panel and go to LAN Setup > NAT Mode and select Bridged. On ISP-supplied gateways, you may need to call the provider to switch modes because the setting is often locked in the firmware.

Troubleshooting Arris Gateway Login

  1. Page does not load at 192.168.0.1. Verify you are connected to the gateway and not a separate router downstream. Open a command prompt and run ipconfig to check your default gateway address. If it shows a different IP address, you are behind another router. Connect directly to the Arris device instead.

  2. Admin password rejected. Try the password printed on the device label. ISP-supplied gateways rarely use the generic admin/password combination. If no label exists, try common ISP defaults or contact your provider.

  3. Gateway stuck on boot (lights flashing). Unplug power for 30 seconds, then reconnect. If the online light does not go solid after 10 minutes, the cable signal may be weak. Check coaxial connections and ensure the splitter is not degrading signal quality.

  4. Wi-Fi drops frequently. Log in and check the wireless channel. Auto-channel sometimes picks congested channels in apartment buildings. Manually set the 2.4 GHz band to channel 1, 6, or 11 and the 5 GHz band to a DFS channel above 100 for less interference.

  5. Cannot access certain features. ISP firmware locks many settings on provider-supplied gateways. Features like port forwarding, DMZ, and bridge mode may require calling your ISP to unlock or may not be available. Purchasing a retail SURFboard model gives you full admin access.

Arris Router FAQ

What is the default IP address for Arris routers?

Arris gateways use 192.168.0.1 as the default IP address. Type this in your browser while connected to the device. ISP-configured units from AT&T may use 192.168.1.254 instead, so check the sticker on the device if 192.168.0.1 does not load.

What is the default Arris router password?

The factory default username is admin and the password is password. ISP-supplied units often have a custom password printed on the device label. Xfinity-branded Arris gateways may use a different default set by Comcast.

What is the difference between modem mode and gateway mode on Arris?

Gateway mode means the device handles both modem and router functions, including DHCP, NAT, and Wi-Fi. Modem mode (also called bridge mode) disables the router functions and passes the internet connection directly to a separate router. Use modem mode if you have your own router and want to avoid double NAT.

How do I reset an Arris gateway to factory settings?

Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the device. Press and hold with a paperclip for 15 seconds until the lights flash. Wait 3-5 minutes for the gateway to reboot and re-establish the cable connection. All custom settings return to factory defaults.

Does Arris support DOCSIS 3.1?

Yes. The SBG8300 and SB8200 support DOCSIS 3.1, which enables multi-gigabit download speeds on compatible cable networks. Older models like the SBG6900-AC use DOCSIS 3.0, which maxes out around 600 Mbps in typical configurations.

Can I use my own Arris modem instead of renting from my ISP?

Yes. Retail SURFboard models like the SBG8300 are compatible with most major cable ISPs. Check your ISP's approved device list before purchasing. You will need to call the ISP to register the modem's MAC address on their network.
